Module Calculations without an expression/2 callback are yet another thing entirely: they run in Elixir on each record after it’s been fetched from the database. This is mentioned in passing (“…When calculations require more complex code or can’t be pushed down into the data layer…”), but is super easy to shoot oneself in the foot with, especially for a junior dev.

Oh yeah I got bit by this in particular and it took me some hours to understand what was happening – our DB queries seemed to have been pulling too much. Implicit behavior is met with “nope” from me.

Ash expressions look like Elixir but don’t behave like Elixir.

Admittedly I never worked as deep and long with Ash to get to that but that sounds like something that would make me curse. Hope it gets addressed in some capacity.
