Work experience: Backend engineer with more than 10 years of experience, the last 6 in production Elixir at Turn.io, a WhatsApp chat platform used by health and social-impact organisations (WHO, UNHCR, national health programmes) whose systems handle millions of messages per day. I was one of the first engineers to join and helped scale both the product and the team building the bulk messaging engine, an IFTTT-like automation system, the Oban-based background job infrastructure, and all of Turn’s AI features. I spoke at ElixirConf 2023 about the architecture of our low-code chatbot builder.
Languages: Elixir (6 years, production, at scale). The stack matters less to me than the problem, though, happy to pick up whatever a project actually calls for.
Area of expertise:
- WhatsApp Business Platform — Cloud API, template messaging, webhooks, Coexistence, and the operational realities of high-throughput messaging: rate limits, delivery guarantees, backpressure.
- AI engineering — I built Turn’s AI features end to end: LLM-powered agents, the agentic loop around them (tool use, skills, orchestration), RAG pipelines, and the evaluation platform we use to ship them with confidence.
- Postgres & Elasticsearch at scale — query optimisation, indexing, partitioning, and schema design for tables growing by millions of rows a day. If a query that used to be fast has turned slow, that’s familiar territory.
