Turns a path like "a/b/c" into a nested map of maps like %{"a" => %{"b" => %{"c" => %{}}}}

put_in(%{}, Enum.map(String.split("a/b/c", "/"), &Access.key(&1, %{})), %{})
#⇒ %{"a" => %{"b" => %{"c" => %{}}}}

An interesting alternative solution. To make it more readable, I’d suggest writing it as

keys = 
  path
  |> String.split("/")
  |> Enum.map(&Access.key(&1, %{}))
put_in(tree, keys, %{})
