Which will match a , aa , aaaaa , but not a0 , thus the first loop matches out the aa0 and extracts the first a and returns 97 / ?a , leaving a0 , it repeats again and fails to match a0 thus ending, so repeat returns [97] / [?a] / 'a' , thus the successful return value should return [97] with a leftover of "a0" , and this is indeed what ExSpirit does:
