The results from the survey are now available at Stack Overflow Developer Survey 2026 .
Some highlights for the BEAM community:
- Elixir remains among the most admired programming languages (meaning that those who use Elixir want to keep using it), with Gleam and Erlang not far behind. The only language that is both more used and more admired than Elixir is Rust. [language detailed data]
- Similarly, Phoenix remains among the most admired web frameworks. The only web framework that is (barely) both more used and more admired is Axum. [framework detailed data]
Erlang and Elixir used to be the top paying technologies in the 2024 survey, but they seem to have dropped the category entirely from the more recent surveys.
As a little meta-commentary, I mentioned diminishing response rates to the SO survey last year, and the trend seems to continue: this year, the survey received 31000 responses, when the previous years have been 49000, 65000 and 90000 respectively. While this still remains the largest online developer survey (as far as I know, let me know if I’m wrong!), the speed at which the numbers decline must have an impact on the comparability of the data from one year to the next.
