I use this machine from early 2018:
- Host: ThinkPad X1 Carbon 5th (2017)
- CPU: Intel i7-7500U (4) @ 3.500GHz
- Memory: 16Gb
- GPU: Intel HD Graphics 620
- Screen: 14’, 1920x1080
…and I’m still satisfied because of:
- best laptop keyboard I know from my point of view
- just enough sized touchpad, with physical top buttons which are SO great to click with the left thumb from my experience, hard to think doing without today
- lightweight (1.1kg), and a 14’ screen for a laptop is the perfect fit for me
- 4+ hours on battery, new battery can be found for ~50€ (I changed once in 7 years)
- 16Gb of RAM, which is a minimum today for some development tasks
- no hardware compatibility issue on GNU/Linux (Ubuntu and Archlinux distribution tested)
- works well with my DELL K17A Deck Station with it’s USB-C port for charging
Second-hand of this laptop can be found for cheap on the internet. I did a search at the moment I write this, and I found one with the same specs at 240€.
